LoveKit Ministry

And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing?  And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?” And the king will answer them, Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me. Matthew 25:38-40

In August 2014, as always motivated by the love of Christ, the TELC Outreach Committee launched the LoveKit Ministry.

This ministry reflects our Church’s mission statement to LOVE, NURTURE, SERVE and SHARE with our Santa Barbara neighbors, through a random or planned act of kindness. More than 200 LoveKits have been given to men and women at Pershing Park’s weekly homeless program or directly to individuals in need. When the street or a vehicle is “home”, and showers are only found at community organizations, missions, or churches, a hygiene kit given by TELC members and youth is a small, but loving and useful gift. This intergenerational ministry gives all TELC members—especially youth—the opportunity to raise their overall awareness and understanding of the lives and struggles of homeless brothers in sisters in our community. All this we do in Jesus’ name.

Our Homeless Neighbors

In January 2015, 600 volunteers surveyed our homeless neighbors throughout Santa Barbara County. Almost 62% of the County’s homeless live in Santa Barbara, with 893 chronically homeless individuals identified. Seventy-five percent are men, 25% are women. Their average age is 43, and 15% identify as US veterans. While 34% of these individuals live in shelters, 54% call the street or a vehicle “home.”
