Church, Faith, and Individual Belief in the Late Middle Ages and Reformation
Oct 1 @ 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Later this month Lutherans and Protestants worldwide will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.  This calls for celebration!  Today we are privileged to host Prof. Samuel Claussen, Assistant Professor of History from California Lutheran University, to speak to us about the historical setting of Luther’s Germany.

Dr. Claussen is a medieval European historian.  His research deals with violence, religion, and chivalry in medieval Castile and its place in the wider Mediterranean and western European worlds.  Dr. Claussen works to understand the ideas of knights and men-at-arms in the medieval world through an examination of traditional historical sources such as chronicles, treatises, and the records of central government, but also through literary and imaginative sources such as frontier ballads, poetry, and chivalric romance.

By Heart: Conversations with Martin Luther’s Small Catechism
Oct 8 @ 9:15 AM – 10:15 AM

The 500th anniversary of the Reformation is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on one of Martin Luther’s seminal contributions to the church:  The Small Catechism, and also to reflect on catechetical training for the church of today.  We are making use of a resource co-authored by Bishop Guy Erwin.  This week:  The Story of the Small Catechism.
